Thinking of starting a business in Nigeria this year? You’re in the right place.

Whether you’re a side hustler ready to go legit, a first-time founder still figuring things out, or a Nigerian in the diaspora finally ready to build back home — one of the smartest steps you can take is registering your business properly.

But we know it can feel overwhelming — CAC, forms, documents, fees… where do you even start?

This guide gives you a simple, up-to-date checklist for registering a business in Nigeria in 2025. Just what you need to know.

Why You Need to Register Your Business

Let’s start here, because a lot of people ask:

“Do I have to register my business?”

Technically, no. But if you’re serious about turning your idea into a real business, yes, you should.

Here’s why business registration matters:

  • It protects your business name
  • You can open a business bank account
  • It builds credibility with customers and partners
  • It makes you eligible for funding, grants, and contracts
  • It gives you peace of mind — because your hustle is now legally recognized

In short: registration is how you stop hustling like a business, and start building as one.

What You Need to Register a Business in Nigeria (2025 Edition)

Now, let’s get into the checklist. This is what you’ll need to register a business through Nigeria’s
Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC):

  1. Choose Your Business Name

Pick a name you love — but also have a Plan B and C.

Why? Because CAC will check if the name is available, and common names go quickly.

Quick tips:

  • Avoid names that are too similar to existing companies
  • Don’t use restricted words (like “national”, “group”, or “holding”) unless approved
  • Think of something unique, simple, and brandable
  1. Decide Your Business Structure

This is where you choose how your business will be legally set up.

Here are the most common options:

Structure Best For
Business Name (Sole Proprietorship) Individuals or small businesses
Limited Liability Company (LLC) Startups, partnerships, scalable ventures
Partnership  Two or more people running a business together with shared responsibility
Incorporated Trustees NGOs, religious or non-profit organizations

New to partnerships?

This structure is ideal if you and one or more co-founders want to jointly own and operate a business without forming a full limited liability company. CAC recognizes it as a separate, valid business setup.

Not sure which one is right for you?

Corporate Bestie can walk you through the pros and cons based on your goals.

  1. Gather Your Personal Details

Every founder, director, or business owner needs to provide:

  • Full legal name (same as on ID)
  • Valid ID (NIN, passport, voter card, driver’s license)
  • Phone number and email address
  • Residential address

For companies, you’ll also list:

  • Number of shareholders and directors
  • Proposed share capital (e.g., ₦1 million is common for SMEs)
  1. Choose a Business Address

This can be your home, office, or even a virtual address (yes, really).

Later, you can update this when your business moves or scales — no stress.

  1. Describe What Your Business Does

You’ll need to briefly state your business activities (called “Nature of Business” or “Objects” on CAC forms).

Examples:

  • “Retail of skincare and beauty products”
  • “Online fashion consulting and styling”
  • “Import and distribution of mobile accessories”

Keep it simple but broad enough to grow with you.

  1. Submit Your Application & Get Your CAC Certificate

Once everything’s ready, your application is submitted to the CAC.

Here’s what they’ll do:

  • Check name availability
  • Process your registration forms
  • Issue your Certificate of Incorporation and CAC registration documents

The good news? Corporate Bestie handles all of this for you — so you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Important Update for 2025: CAC Has Reviewed Its Fees

As of
August 1, 2025, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) is reviewing and updating its service fees. That means it may soon cost more to register the same business you could register today.

If you’re reading this before August, you still have time to lock in current rates and save money.

Can You Register from Outside Nigeria?

Absolutely — and many of our clients do.

If you’re a Nigerian living abroad (UK, U.S., Canada, etc.), you can still register a business 100% remotely.

You’ll need:

  • Your chosen business name(s)
  • A valid Nigerian ID
  • A working email
  • A Nigerian phone number (or one we can reach you on)

Corporate Bestie handles the full process online — from name reservation to final certificate.
